San Pedro Chenalho

Going towards Chenalho, you pass through San Miguel Mitontic, a Tzotzil community located 26 kilometers from San Crustobal, within a long valley, with many calcareous rocks. In front of the ruins of the ancient temple of San Miguel Arcangel is the plaza, point of reunion of the people whose life passes in an adjusted rhythm because of the agricultural activites and the calendar of fiestas. Mitontic also possesses its characteristic attire. The feminine huipiles are adorned with geometric designs, above all, rhomboids which symbolize the unity between the sky and earth.
About four kilometers ahead of Mitontic is San Pedro Chenalho, occupying a valley furrowed by a river amongst coffee, orange, banana and peach trees. In the church, the saints are dressed with clothes that identify this Tzotzil community. As in other towns of the region, here, the beauty and tradition are evident in the textiles and fiestas; in particular, the celebration of carnival, lent, and San Pedro’s in June. On the huipiles there are symbols related to ancient myths. After this town, the highway goes into the mountains towards Chalchihuitan and Pantelho.
