Huixtan

A Tezltal village, 32 kilometers from San Cristobal de Las Casas, which, as many other towns, presents a dispersed pattern of inhabitants of prehispanic times. Due to this, the aggregate that is at the foot of a small valley, is only constituted by its square and the constructions that surround it. It is a harmonious aggregate, as much for its volume as for its materials and colors of vernacular architecture, of which the church of San Miguel is outstanding. This building, from the colonial era, is very simple in its base and methods of construction; only the facade received a more formal treatment, due to its framed door in a Moorish type arch; its buttresses that open up towards the plaza and its finish of curved lines. Huixtan was stage to the decisive battle of the rebellion of the Zendales in 1712. The legend says that the apparition of the Virgen de la Caridad (Virgin of Charity) was determined in its result.
