The Palms

In this place, situated at 333 kilometers from Tuxtla Gutierrez, you can admire the peculiar coastline ambient. A dirt road, 23 kilometers long, communicates Acacoyagua with the Las Garzas (Herons) wharf, from where the launches originate their journey through the canals, under the canopy formed by the branches of the mangroves, whose huge roots come out above the waters surface. The mangroves surround the coastal lagoons, where the water lilies float toward the sea. A rich fauna that includes: mammals, reptiles, and above all birds, live here. Amongst these last ones are the espatulas (a long legged bird) with its splendorous rose color. Integrated into the landscape are the massive shell beds of small conches; the shell artisans of the town of Chantuto, one of the oldest in Chiapas, took advantage of these natural resources, and obtained a growing, sedentary occupation, 5000 years ago.
