Chinkultik

How to get there:

Chiapas is a state that is located in the southeast of the Mexican republic, bordered by Tabasco, Oaxaca, Veracruz, the Pacific Ocean, and the republic of Guatemala. From Tuxtla Gutierrez, the capital of the state of Chiapas, to where you  can arrive by air or land, take the highway that runs to Comitan de Dominguez. 12 kilometers beyond the city, heading towards Ciudad Cuahtemuc, you will find the highway that will take you directly to the archaeological site of Chinkultik

A Maya site, 56 kilometers from Comitan, that was adapted to a series of calcareous hills and the presence of various bodies of water, of which the Cenote (water deposit) Azul belongs to. Their high point, as constructors, was in the late classic period (600 - 900 A.D.), although it still remained inhabited for various centuries afterwards, in difference to the Maya centers of the low lands. The sojourn takes us to various aggregates, still unexplored, although the presence of buildings and squares can be felt. Crowning one of the hills, is the "Acropolis", formed by five structures: three small temples of idols that antecede the major temple of five bodies in staired order, and a base and pedestal at the edge of the "Cenote" (water deposit), from where the offerings were thrown. Chinkultik also has a ball court with associated sculptures. To the archaeological interest, it also adds the spectacle of its emplacement, dominating the marshy zone and ample Comitecan plains.
